On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, “My husband,” and no longer will you call me, “My Baal.” For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be mentioned by name no more. I will make for you a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety.

Thus says the Lord: I will answer the prayers of my people Israel. — Hosea 2: 21-22
Edward Roe was a 19th century novelist. Many people can’t recall a book he wrote, but some may recall a passage he penned. It reads: “To a certain extent, God gives people the prayerful control of himself, and becomes their willing agent; and when … the record of all lives is revealed, it will probably be seen that not those who astonished the world with their powers but those who quietly, through prayer, used God’s power….were the ones who made the world move forward.”
How do I “image” prayer?” What keeps me from accessing God’s power through prayer, more than I do? Prayer is exhaling the spirit of man and inhaling the spirit of God. —Edwin Keith

Lord, nothing matters more than our relationship with you. When we place our lives totally in your hands, a peace and joy even filters over the crosses we carry. But how easy it is to grab control from you, imagining we can steer our way into serenity. Why do we try to go it alone? Do we fear that you will lay on our shoulders a burden that will buckle us to our knees? Help us to remember that you desperately desire our highest good and the highest good of all we love so much.
