Most Holy Name of Jesus

John 1: 29-34

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! It is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

Genuine Disciple

“A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.” I did not know him but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel. [John 1: 30-31]

John’s powerful testimony to the one coming after him is all the more compelling because he didn’t yet know the man to whom he was bearing witness. Even though John was a prophet, he, too, had to do everything on faith. A genuine disciple is one who points beyond him or herself towards the One who truly is to be followed.

Prayer

Lord, we ask for the awareness of the Holy Spirit in our daily life. May the Spirit also guide us to look upon our actions and motives with honesty and patience. We ask that that the Spirit give us the freedom to review our day without condemnation and without complacency.  And when we need wisdom to make a decision, work through a conflict, or discern a pathway, may we pray, ”Come, Holy Spirit.”
