St. Paul Miki, SJ and Companions

Gal 2:19-20

For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Making room for Christ

I can only imagine the courage and faith it took for St. Paul Miki, SJ and his companions to give up their lives for their Christian faith. I think, however, today’s reading gives us at least part of the reason why they had such courage and faith. “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.” It is Christ who lives in me.

What does it take for Christ to live me? My life is pretty crowded with all sorts of plans of my own, expectations that I have for myself and a clear idea of the way things should be ordered in my life. This may not be bad, plans and expectations may be needed, but does this leave room for Christ? What will it take for me to move some of this stuff out and allow Christ in?

Prayer

God, grant me the courage and faith that you provided St. Paul Miki so I might create ever more space for you in my life.
